It depends on the individual with the problems and how their life is going. It is tough to evaluate since there is often a slippery slope to recovery. If either the patient or the therapist feels that there is no progress being made, then changing to another therapist with another point of view may help. However, testing for a long period of time without providing an avenue of action--or insight--is not particularly valuable for someone who wants to learn to cope with their problems, not just define them.
