Aluminum is a metal. If you figure out the oxidation number, it comes out to be Al+3. There are many others, Aluminum is just a good example.

Aluminum has an oxidation number of +3. It wants to be stable, and to do so it will lose three electrons. Electrons are negative, that's why the oxidation number is negative.
