Saturn's day is the English equivalent of 'Saturnalia'. The Latin word was the noun form of 'saturnalis', which means 'belonging to Saturn'. The adjective and the noun referred to a festival in honor of the god Saturn. It was held for three days in December. The first day, the 17th, was called 'Saturnalia prima'; the second 'Saturnalia secunda'; and the third 'Saturnalia tertia'. Gifts were exchanged, public banquets and events were held, and slaves were given a reprieve by being served instead by their masters.
