"Lapjes stof" literally or the English loan word "Patchwork" may be Dutch equivalents of "pieced work."

The Dutch and the English phrases refer to the joining into one quilt, piece of clothing, hanging or accessory of many pieces of cloth, fabric or material otherwise unusable because of their sizes or shapes. The combination may have no set pattern, such as in crazy quilting. Or the combination may form larger shapes by the grouping together and patterning of smaller sizes, such as the strips that together form the flying goose pattern.
