What is 5-4-3 rule in Ethernet?

This rule is a limitation of devices and connections that may be used in a network before problems occur. The rule is "5 total segments, 4 of which may be connected via repeaters or switches, 3 segments which must not be populated with clients".

Note that this rule only applies to networks running at 10 mbps.
