Depending on the vehicle, many standard transmissions use ATF, not gear oil.
Mopar atf+3 or atf+4
Mitsubishi recommends "mercon" fluid for auto transaxles. When i bought my galant, there was a shifting problem from starts and slow-downs ("slamming" gear changes). I drained the fluid and filled with "atf+4" fluid (recommended for 'some' mitisubishi vehicles). I hav not had any problems since.
The big old iron cased units use gear oil, the aluminum cased units use atf.
