Most castles were built on high ground for several reasons. The people in the castle had a good view of the area around it and could see people or an army coming. The massive look of the castle also gave the impression of great power and finally defense was better on high ground than in other places. The first castles were Mott and Bailey made of wood so it was important to make sure it couldn't be burned down and harder to reach.
