The basophil is the rarest type of white blood cell. They account for less than 1% of all the white blood cells in a body. It can be identified by its deep purple nucleus with 1-2 constrictions. These granules contain histamine, a type of inflammatory chemical which acts as vasodilator to attract white blood cells to inflamed sites. Basophils play a role in the mediating hypersensitivity reactions such as allergies and Asthma.
