She was a princess offered as a sacred sacrifice to a seamonster (sent by Poseidon + Neptune, I believe). She was tied up to a rock near the seashore, and she was recuesd by Perseus, who married her. Perseus was a demi-god, son of Zeus (Jupiter), slayer of Medusa.
