It depends entirely on the year, model and engine. The 2001 3.0i roadster will do 0-60 in 5.9 seconds. That's with the M54 engine producing about 225hp. This was the fastest "non M" Z3 made. The slowest would be the early model 1.9L (4 cylinder) cars, which would take nearly 8 seconds. Not bad, actually, in part because the car weighs just under 3,000lbs. The fastest US Z3's are the 2001 and 2002 M roadster and coupes. They had the 3.2L S52 engines producing 315HP. Their 0-60 speed is around 5 seconds (and a kick in the pants to drive!)
The BMW z4 replaced the BMW z3 in late 2002. The BMW z3 was introduced in 1996 shortly after staring in a James Bond movie. Not as easy on the eyes as the z3 but just as nice.
