Tarsila do Amaral [September 1, 1886 - January 17, 1973] was one of the most famous Brazilian painters in the 20th century. She's credited with developing a uniquely Brazilian style of Modernism. Her painting, 'Abaporu' ['the man that eats' in Tupi-Guarani], became the most valuable Brazilian painting in the world when Argentine collector Eduardo Costantini paid $1.5 million for it in 1995.
