A personal view is that there is no riddle, what happens to us is the result of what we think, say and do. The riddle is that there is no riddle! The Buddha teaches that the only thing that limits our ability to see this is the ignorance that we have created.

The Buddha did not discover the meaning of life. It has no meaning, it simply is. What he did determine is that the unenlightened life is in a constant state of suffering or unsatisfactoriness. This is due to desire for worldly needs. He stated this unsatisfactory condition can be eliminated by reducing desire by following the Eightfold Path
