The physical environment of Canada is best described as many regions, including steep and rugged mountains, islands, flat plains, rolling landscape, and indented Coastlines. The East Coast has an indented shoreline with the Appalachian highlands running from north to south to the United States where they are the Appalachian Mountains. The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Lowlands occupy a good part of the eastern half of Canada, providing fertile soils and allowing good transportation. To the west lies the Canadian Shield. This is flat and rugged topography and composed of rocks that are billions of years old. The Canadian Shield occupies about one-half of the land area of Canada. It has proved unattractive for settlement and has restricted transportation across it. To the north of the Shield are the Arctic Islands which are several large islands and hundreds of small ones, generally snow and ice-covered during much of the year. To the west of the Shield are the Prairies, fertile areas supporting a variety of crops, including grains such as wheat, and animal grazing. The western section of Canada is mountainous, with tall peaks of the Rocky and Coast Mountains.
