The Doctor's name is unpronouncable, and so long that he can't remember it, which is the case with pretty much every time-lord. In Series 3, The Sound of Drums, when the Doctor and the Master are talking, they mention the Masters name, and the Doctor says "You chose it." Apparently, all Time Lords choose a name for themselves. The Master chose his because he enjoys the element of dominance, and power, the Doctor, because he is there to help those who need it.
