The above answer is no longer necessarily correct. Bioware has confirmed that there are still stories to be told in the Mass Effect Universe and that there will likely be a fourth game. It is unlikely though that ME4 would follow Shepard again, and it is unknown if it will take place before, during, or after the events of the main trilogy. There are however rumors that it might take place during the First Contact War.
