EPCOT stood for (and still stands for): Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. Walt Disney was fascinated with the idea of technology of innovation, so his dream was to build an actually city, government and all, in Orlando, Florida. It would have all the newest technology, including the monorail (which is now used all over Walt Disney World). Walt especially loved this idea because it would "never be completed," in his words. He came up with this idea near the end of his life, because he looked at his children and grandchildren and wondered what kind of a city they would live in. Dissatisfied with the way cities were in that time, he wanted to make a clean, efficient city. This was the inspiration for EPCOT. Although it turned out to be an amusement park and not a city, a lot of his ideas still came showed up in the park, which was opened in 1982, well after Walt Disney's death.
Epcot is known for its signature ride, Spaceship Earth. The ride's structure serves as a "weenie" and the symbol for Epcot in many Walt Disney World merchandise and promotional pieces. Epcot is divided into two sections: Future World and the World Showcase. Future World is primarily an exploration of technology and invention, relating to many subjects such as energy, agriculture, and the human imagination. The World Showcase consists of eleven international pavilions, staffed by natives of each country and exhibiting history, culture, and food from various nations.
Before becoming a theme park, Epcot was known as the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. This was a planned community designed by Walt Disney that he believed was a perfect harmony between family life, business, and recreation.
