Some of the songs are abstract, some of them are based on events in history ("You're Crashing, But You're No Wave") and most of them are based on whatever comes out of Pete's head and his own experiences.

I've heard that on the newest album he's looking into many different perspectives, such as the one in "Headfirst Slide into Cooperstown on a Bad Bet," which takes the POV of a man having an affair with a married woman.
