The best-know song that he composed was the band's theme, Moonlight Serenade.

The band's most famous recording was of course In the Mood. Miller didn't write the song though. It's normally credited to Joe Garland but had contributions from Wingy Manone and other early-20th century jazz musicians. The song ran over 8 minutes which was too long for the limited records of the time, and Miller made it his own by tightening it down to a shorter and more vital score.
