Goal seek allows you to establish a value to be used in a formula so that formula makes a certain total. As a very simple example, suppose you want to find out what number added to 10 will give you 16. Obviously it is 6. You can use Goal Seek to get this for you. What you would do is this. We will leave cell A1 blank, as it is the cell that we want to use to get the 6. Into cell A2 we put the following formula:
=A1+10
Now we want use Goal Seek to set the value of A1 to 6, so that the formula in A2 gives us 16. Our "Goal" is the 16. Go to the Tools Menu and pick Goal Seek. A dialog box comes up looking for 3 things. For Set Cell put in A2. For To Value put in 16. For By Changing Cell put in A1. Then click OK. It then tries to find a value for A1 that will set the result of the formula in A2 to 16. Very quickly it will come up with 6.
That is a very simple and obvious result, which demonstrates what it is for. Often the value you are trying to find to use in the formula won't be as obvious as the 6 was in this example. That is when Goal Seek becomes really useful.
Remember that the formula must refer to the cell that you are trying to find a value for and you are putting in a result that you want the formula to reach. You just have to be careful about which things to put into the 3 parts of the dialog box. Set Cell is always the one with the formula. To Value is the result that you want the formula to reach. By Changing Cell is a cell that is referenced in the formula and for which you are trying to establish a value for.
