HIV-positive means infected with the virus that causes AIDS or Auto-Immune Deficiency Syndrome. The virus attacks the immune system and destroys T-cells. It makes a person more likely to get a number of diseases. Without anti-viral drugs, it rapidly leads to illness causing death. The illness can be anything from pneumonia to Kaposi's sarcoma, a formerly rare kind of cancer.
