Iodolactionisation is when a lactone is formed from an unsaturated carboxylic acid using iodine. The iodine attacks the double bond forming a (positive) iodinium ion (like an epoxide). The OH group of the acid then attacks the most substituted end of the iodinium ion intramolecularly, forming a cyclic ester know as a lactone, with a pendant iodine
