King Lear has many messages and themes but some of the top are:
The Idea of Sight vs. Blindness both literally and metaphorically
The Idea of Madness vs. Sanity
True Love vs. Self Serving Love
It's a play; it doesn't have a "viewpoint". Only extremely heavy-handed melodramas tell you who are the good guys and who are the bad guys, and prevent you from ever understanding the point of view of the bad guys. It is quite possible to look at the situation in King Lear from the point of view of the "bad guys"--Edmund, Regan and Goneril. Edmund does have a valid complaint: he is treated worse because he is a bastard, and he cannot expect the kind of inheritance Edgar will get. Edmund is going to succeed by the only way he knows--by using his not inconsiderable wits. Goneril does have a valid complaint about Lear: he and his 100 cronies are treating her house like a brothel or riotous inn. She is right: they are rude and arrogant. She and Regan are correct in saying that Lear has become irrational and erratic. They are not being bad because they like being bad; they are dealing with the all-too-common problem of an aging and irascible parent. Your parents probably did something similar when they moved grandpa from his house to the nursing home. Edmund, Regan and Goneril, along with Goneril's husband Albany, lead the patriotic and heroic defence of England against an invasion by French troops led by the Queen of France. That ought to make them the good guys, or so you would think. Of all of Shakespeare's tragedies, Lear and Hamlet are those which leave the audience the most room (in a competent production) to explore the viewpoints of all the characters, even the so-called "bad" ones.
