The pharaoh incorrectly known today as "Tut" was named twt.'nx.'imn in hieroglyphs; his full name was twt,'nx.'imn nb.xprw.r', often written today as Tutankhamun Nebkheperure. He was never called "Tut" in ancient times, nor in any scientific studies, nor does anyone with respect for history use that name, which is nothing more than modern American slang.

In his cartouche the name twt.'nx''imn is written with the chick-bread-chick combination which spells twt, meaning "image", followed by the sign 'inx (ankh) meaning "living", followed by the signs spelling the name of the god 'imn(Amun) - these are actually written first, out of respect, but are pronounced last. The name means "Living image of Amun".

nb.xprw.r' means "Ra is the lord of appearances or transformations".
