However, the settlement struggled due to conflicts with local Native American tribes, harsh conditions, and supply issues. By 1689, the fort was abandoned after La Salle was killed by his own men, and the remaining colonists were either killed or captured. The site ultimately fell into ruin, marking the end of French colonial ambitions in Texas.
