MDF is Medium Density Fibre Board.
Its actually made of fine wood fibres mixed with resins. It comes in a range of thicknesses and can be used for shelving (at its basic level) right up to actual furniture such as cupboards - Ive made stairs from this and its been excellent to work with. It does not like moisture unless its sealed really well.
