she found ither self
Mary Lennox is the garden. The garden is locked away by Mr Carven, like Mary is locked out of people's lives. Nobody wants the garden just as nobody wanted Mary.
The garden is unkempt and neglected like Mary. The state that she finds the garden in, reflects the turmoil that is within her and once she starts to clear away the dead twigs and leaves (like clearing away the cobwebs in her head), the therapy begins. The theme of 'magic' is ever present throughout the novel. It is believed that the magic of nature cures and heals her.
When she meets Dickon, who is the symbol of wholesomeness, she invites him into the garden ie She allows him into her life. Dickon, too, like an angel, transforms Mary from being a 'disagreeable little girl' into someone who is able to love again. He teaches her to grow things and understand the world around her including herself.
The power of nature and positive thinking is omnipresent in the novel and it is this 'magic' that repairs broken relationships and hearts.
