The Secret Garden

What is Mary lennox problem in secret garden?

Mary Lennox is the garden. The garden is locked away by Mr Carven, like Mary is locked out of people's lives. Nobody wants the garden just as nobody wanted Mary.

The garden is unkempt and neglected like Mary. The state that she finds the garden in, reflects the turmoil that is within her and once she starts to clear away the dead twigs and leaves (like clearing away the cobwebs in her head), the therapy begins. The theme of 'magic' is ever present throughout the novel. It is believed that the magic of nature cures and heals her.

When she meets Dickon, who is the symbol of wholesomeness, she invites him into the garden ie She allows him into her life. Dickon, too, like an angel, transforms Mary from being a 'disagreeable little girl' into someone who is able to love again. He teaches her to grow things and understand the world around her including herself.

The power of nature and positive thinking is omnipresent in the novel and it is this 'magic' that repairs broken relationships and hearts.

The Secret Garden

What is the secret to happiness?

Self-acceptance. yes this is true , but it is not only that. you need to remember to tresure everyone around you because you don't know what you have until it is gone forever and you have no way to get it back!

I disagree with the above answerers. The secret to happiness is neither to accept yourself nor to treasure what you have in your life. Why? Because both of those strategies are just vague, unspecific suggestions. Just how are you supposed to appreciate what you have? You can try. You can even repeat over and over to yourself, "I appreciate all that I have. I am happy." And nothing will happen. The same is true for accepting yourself. It is not possible to simply absorb happiness from your surroundings or from yourself. Happiness is not found by appreciating what you have but by ridding yourself of what you have. Give without counting the cost. You just bought a new car? Give it away. You just got a raise? Give away every cent of it. You think you're really smart? Fail a test on purpose. It is only in giving of ourselves that we can feel the thrill of happiness.
