One of the best quotations in the play is near the end after Hally spits in Sam's face.

"If you're not careful...Master Harold... you're going to be sitting up there by yourself for a long time to come, and there won't be a kite in the sky"

This is kind of like a big metaphor. The kite is supposed to help Hally stay grounded. It is a way for him to break free from the apartheid society. The bench he would be sitting on was "Whites Only." Sam is trying to say that if Hally does not watch his anger, he will end up alone, in this apartheid society, with no one to help him (seeing as Sam is the only one who really cares about Hally).
