Michigan has been a major supplier of iron and copper, with extensive mines across the western Upper Peninsula. Michigan has also been famous for Motown, a major player in the music industry from the late 1950's though the 1960's. One of the most famous aspects of Michigan has always been the automotive industry; Henry Ford perfected the assembly line in Detroit, and many major automotive makes were produced in Detroit at one time including Packard, Checker (taxi cabs!), and of course general Motors, Ford, and Chrysler Motors.
