NMMI has two main songs which are Institute specific - Old Post, and the NMMI Fight Song. Old Post is sung at most alumni functions, homecoming, and other reverent occasions, whereas the Fight Song is played during all parades (Pass in Review) and sporting events.
THE OLD POST
Verse:
This is our Al-ma Ma-ter
This is our stalwart Ins-ti-tute;
We'll have her always
On our way,
Mem-'ries are with us
Day by day:
Chorus:
We will re-member Kay-dets March-ing
We will re-member Kay-dets play-ing
And bu-gles in the sun-rise
All of our life be-neath blue skies;
These are the things that can-not van-ish,
No mat-ter where we go …..
Old Friends …. Old Post …..
Place we love most …..
In you our hearts will grow.
NMMI Fight Song
Chorus:
N-M-M-I
With our col-ors flying high,
We're all in step
And full of pep,
As we go marching by
RAH RAH RAH
Cheers for the team
On the field or in the gym
The old Bron-co
Is rar-in' to go
And the In-sti-tute is out to win.
(After band interlude repeat chorus)
Anyone who has ever attended NMMI will be able to remember these lyrics like it was yesterday.
Yes - NMMI is both a prep (high) school and accredited junior college. While some HS graduates go straight to the service academies, many others who may have been denied initial entry will be offered the opportunity to attend after a year in one of the many Academy prep schools, of which NMMI is one. NMMI offers the Army's Early Commissioning Program (ECP) and graduates the highest number of Army lieutenants outside of the USMA. A cadet in the ECP will have either 3 years of JROTC or have attended Basic Camp (not the same as Basic Training), and may be offered a billet with a local NG ADA unit nearby, and be paid as an E5 while doing this monthly drill. Upon graduation from NMMI with an AA degree, the cadet will be commissioned as a USAR 2LT and be given 3 more years to finish the BA or BS. Either way, it's a win-win. Prepping will improve the chance of being accepted later into a service academy, but if that falls through the cadet will still be able to be commissioned in one more year - and your contract date is the pay entry base date (PEBD) which is factored into retirement.
