On March 27, 2013, Senator Hagan announced that she supports marriage rights for same-sex couples.
In February 2012, Senator Hagan spoke publicly against a similar ban on same-sex marriage which will be the subject of a public referendum in North Carolina in November 2012. Senator Kagan urged North Carolina voters to reject that ban, saying that it have negative consequences.
