The statelet of Northern Ireland was created in 1921 as six counties from the historic nine counties of the province of Ulster, hence NI is often refered to (incorrectly) as Ulster or 'The Province'. The early years were fairly peaceful but the Unionists (pro-British majority) bullied the minority Irish population and in the sixties the Irish minority had had enough and started non-violent protests which the Unionist authorities failed to tolerate causing violent clashes.
