Orpheus was a mythical hero, son of King Oeagrus and the muse Calliope, to whom is attributed the invention of music as well as many of the arts and sciences of pre-hellenic Greece. He was considered father of the ancient Greek mystery religions since he was thought to have brought to Greece the sacred rites of secret worship and taught the mysteries of nature and of God.
