PC-DOS is the original operating system for the IBM PC. It is basically the same operating system as MS-DOS, but was distributed by IBM instead of being licensed directly from Microsoft.

What was the first IBM personal computer debut?

PCDOS an IBM branded version of MSDOS, licensed to IBM. Eventually IBM abandoned it and MicroSoft took over direct marketing of MSDOS.

What month of DOS was released on first computer of IBM?

The first ever DOS released by IBM was DOS/360 for their IBM System/360 series computers. It was announced in 1964 and first released in June 1966.DOS/360 has no relation to MSDOS or PCDOS for Intel 80x86based computers in the 1980s.

What is the difference between MSDOS and PCDOS?

This is quite complicated; Microsoft developed PC-DOS for IBM in 1981 and shortly afterwards started selling MS-DOS - which was a different product - to other companies. However, as time passed "IBM PC Compatibility" became an important selling point and in 1987 MS-DOS and PC-DOS were essentially the same product.

Should a Dos bootable disc be the same version on all computers?

If you still have it and need it, a generic DOS bootable disc (PCDOS or MSDOS) should work on most intel and intel compatible computers that are compatible with the original 8088/8086 PC architecture. Some computer manufacturers extended the capabilities of their machine and supplied a customized version of a DOS bootable disc. In that case, it may be that the DOS disc may not work properly or at all on other computer models or that computer may not function with other vendors supplied versions of DOS

What is the full meaning of PC-DOS?

DOS and PC DOS are different. When we say DOS, it means Microsoft DOS or MS DOS whereas PC DOS is the different operating system (older than MS-DOS) developed by IBM. The term "DOS" is the acronym for Disk Operating System. This is the main control software that makes the computer start up and commence other loading functions. As stated PCDOS is in fact the same, an operation system and can refer to may of the older languages used when comouters were first developed such as Amiga DOS, Fast DOS etc.

What is the relationship of qdos to cp m and ms dos?

CP/M came out first for the 8080 and was offered to Intel, they rejected it as not necessary. The author Gary Killdell sold it himself and developed versions for other microprocessors. When IBM decided to do the PC they chose CP/M-86 as the operating system. But for unclear reasons Gary would not sign their NDA. IBM could not proceed, but Microsoft had already signed an NDA to provide their BASIC for the PC. IBM turned to them, however Microsoft had no operating system of their own to offer. They found and bought out the developer of QDOS (quick and dirty OS) a CP/M-86 clone. With minor modifications it became the first version of both MSDOS and PCDOS.

What is an operating system software or hardware?

An operating system is a generic term for software that interfaces and buffers between the users and user application programs and the computer hardware which includes memory, disk drives, etc.It can be as simple as the old(er) named Disk Operating System (MSDOS, PCDOS, DRDOS, DOS-11, DOS/360, etc) and Tape operating system (TOS) which had no restrictions on what a running program could do but loaded programs into memory, start them, and did respond to requests by programs for system functions such as finding, reading and writing files. It can be as complex as a multiuser, multiprogramming, multiprocessing system where it manages memory, CPU(s), device assignment, security, communications and other functions as in Z/OS. IBM I, OpenVMS, Unix implementations, Linux, or Windows. It is software. You can install and uninstall operating systems as you like, without changing any hardware inside your computer. The operating system is the system your using such as Microsoft's Windows versions (Windows XP, Windows vista, Windows 7, etc.), Apples Mac OS X snow leopard, Linux distributions. The OS is a system software which provides services for application software. The OS controls Hardware and software like MS word, Photoshop and wordpad. It is the software of your system that allows you to do pretty much everything. Run programs, go onto the Internet or even look at pictures. The Operating system is a software consisting of programs and data that runs on computers and manages the hardware resources and also provides a platform for various application software. An operative system is software serving as a foundation for processes on your computer. The operating system undertakes memory management and important security and stability enhancing tasks that is required for other software to run correctly. Computer hardware often differ in design and function and part of the operative systems's job is to minimize the design work needed by the other layers software to support each type of hardware.

Who did Bill Gates steal DOS from?

Instead of doing the OS themselves (as they had said), they went to a neighbouring company who was working on a direct rip-off of CP/M (that wasn't that good a rip-off either). This company was Seattle Computing and the product was QDOS (Quick & Dirty Operating System). MS bought all the rights for $50,000 (or $40K - $100K depending on who you talk to), and with a few changes the work was complete. Microsoft had, for a song, IBM-DOS and MS-DOS 1.0 (the same products, but different names).http://www.mackido.com/History/History_DrDos.htmlThe first computer that I ever purchased, long before the IBM PC (8086 processor) was an AppleIIe Europlus with 48kb of ram. It came with Applesoft Basic, which was written by Microsoft and was the closest thing to DOS in terms of making the computer useable until they brought out Apple DOS 3.x . I believe I may still have the manuals for it.While MSDos had the same front-end as CPM, it was an entirely different code. CPM was written for the Zilog Z80 processor. If you know anything at all about operating systems, you would know that you have to cut entirely different code for each processor. While it may be fashionable to constantly bag Microsoft, one should know what they are talking about. That code was generally written in machine code.To say that PCDos/MSDos is a direct rip-off of CPM is like saying the Chevy Volt is a direct rip-off of a skaeboard. When IBM had decided to produce a Personal Computer ('PC' is a term coined by IBM), they decided on having an open architecture machine (the guts are accessible and customizable through expansion slots) and as many off-the-shelf components as possible in order to get it into the market ASAP. CPM was owned by Digital Research, so some top guys from IBM in New York made an appointment to see the guys at DR (in San Francisco, I think). When the IBM guys arrived at DR after having flown across the country, the main person with whom the meeting was set up was out flying his private plane, and the other partner sent his wife to the door to tell the IBM folk that they were not interested! After some discussion, one of the IBM guys said he had heard of a guy named Bill Gates in Seattle who was very intelligent and experienced in MS Basic language and in operating systems, like Apple DOS.They went up to Seattle after making an appointment with Bill Gates. They showed him the CPM manual and Bill already had one. They wanted an operating system for the Intel 8086 (?) with basically the same front end as CPM. Bill Gates said they could do the job. He discovered that Seattle Computer was working on an OS for the Intel chip and so contracted them to continue their coding but to have a similar front-end to CPM. The rest, as they say, is history. Also, I believe that most versions of the Basic programming language came directly or indirectly from Microsoft. If you want a really good read, go to your library and borrow Hard Drive, an account of Microsoft's early years. For quite a while, even though Bill Gates was the owner of the company, he paid two (?) of Microsoft's employees more than he paid himself.
