Pea Patch Island is in the middle of the Delaware River, between Delaware and New Jersey. It first appeared around 1760 as a small mud bank. Soon the mud bank grounded a ship full of peas, which spilled and sprouted and tangled in the mud. As the peas grew, they trapped more dirt, forming the island. Today, the island is known for its heron rookery and its military fort, Fort Delaware, built in 1814.
