Phagocytosis is the cellular process of engulfing solid particles by the cell membrane to form an internal phagosome, or "food vacuole." The phagosome is usually delivered to the lysosome, an organelle involved in the breakdown of cellular components, which fuses with the phagosome. ------------------------------------------- The process where a Phagocyte 'disposes' of a pathogen is called phagocytosis, when a bacteria attaches to a phagocyte, using ligands, The phagocyte forms Pseudopods (cytoplasmic arms) that envelope the pathogen, the Psuedopodia then fuse, creating a membrane, enclosing the pathogen forming a phagosome, this moves deeper within the cell to then form with a lysosome forming a phagolysosome (not really imaginitive naming i know, but scientists aren't known for their imaginative naming ). the lysosome contains enzymes (you guessed it, lysozyme) the lysozyme destroys the bacterial cell walls allowing hydrolytic enzymes to digest the rest of the pathogen.

Where does phagocytosis happen?

Phagocytosis takes place in the blood.

What is the movement of particles into the cell?

The movement of large particles of solid food or whole cells into the cell is called phagocytosis. Phagocytosis occurs in three separate steps.

When a cell ingests a solid particle is it called?

Phagocytosis, a form of endocytosis

What are white blood cells called that engulf and destroy bacteria?

White blood cells that engulf and destroy bacteria are known as neutrophils. They are a type of phagocyte that play a key role in the immune response against bacterial infections. Neutrophils engulf bacteria through a process known as phagocytosis, helping to eliminate the invading pathogens from the body.

endocytosis exocytosis phagocytosis and pinocytosis

What is another name for cell eating?

The word that means the same thing as cell eating is phagocytosis. The outcome is the ingestion of particulate matter, such as bacteria, from the extracellular fluid.

Do neurons carry on phagocytosis?

Neurons do not typically carry out phagocytosis. Phagocytosis is a process by which certain immune cells engulf and digest pathogens or debris, and neurons are not specialized for this function. Microglial cells, which are a type of immune cell in the brain, are responsible for phagocytosis in the central nervous system.

Which of these species uses phagocytosis?

Phagocytosis is used by any organisms with a cell that needs to engulf large particles.

What is the difference between endocytosis and phagocytosis?

Phagocytosis is a kind of endocytosis. Endocytosis includes phagocytosis, pinocytosis and receptor-mediated endocytosis. These are just different ways to enter large molecules inside the cell.

What process is responsible for bringing in large particles into the cell?

Phagocytosis is the process responsible for bringing in large particles such as bacteria or dead cells into the cell. During phagocytosis, the cell engulfs the particle by forming a phagosome, which then fuses with lysosomes to break down the ingested material.
