Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl is mostly about Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann's relationship developing, and kicks off all the adventure with Jack Sparrow and the other pirates. There is already a back ground story behind all of the characters (an especially complicated story for Sparrow), and these stories unforld throughout the movie.
