Playstation Plus is a special premium service for PSN users. It costs about £40 per year, gives you a selection of free games to begin with, and then rotates in and out different games each month. However the free games can only be played while you have a current PSN Plus membership, in a way it's renting them but it's not bad for £40 a year to play well over a dozen full games.
PSN Plus members also get discounts on other titles occasionally. Once you buy a discounted title, it is yours for good, even if your PSN Plus membership expires.
