"Pulp Fiction" refers to pulp magazines, which were cheap publications made in the early 20th century. The stories inside were usually lurid, racy and exciting. Tarantino named his film Pulp Fiction because the interwoven stories were inspired by those of pulp magazines. In one scene, John Travolta's character is seen reading Modesty Blaise, an example of pulp fiction.
