A group of people are destined to salvation (what exactly 144,000 means is cause for debate across denominations) by being 'sealed,' which essentially means branded with the mark of God, presumably indicating to the angels that these chosen people are not to be harmed. Then John envisions a mass of people in white robes standing around the throne of God. You could interpret these people to be the sealed, or you could interpret them to be the resurrected dead - saints and others who will be saved.
