Santa Claus does NOT appear in traditional Danish folklore. It is an American invention which have been imported into Danish culture in late 19 century. The same goes obviously for the idea that Santa Claus's home is on the Danish Island of Greenland - so Hollywood's explanation - that he travels by a flying sleigh - is as good as anybodyelse's. In Scandinavian tradition houses, fields and forests are inhabited by nisser/tomter which are small, often old, men with long beards and red hats. These are only nice and helpful as long as you feed them - if you don't they turn hostile and dangerous. This tradition is today mixed with the Sante Claus story, so that Santa is some time seen as a nisse/tomte - sometimes they are his helpers (think : Walt Disney cartoons).
