It is a series of metals arranged in a such a way that if any two of them form a thermocouple, the current would flow through the cold junction from the metal occurring earlier in the series to the metal occurring later.

The series is :

Sb Fe Cd Zn Ag Au Pb Mn Cu Pt Co Ni Bi

The more separated the metals are, the higher will the thermo e.m.f produced.

Metals to the right of Pb are called thermoelectrically positive and metals to the left of Pb are called thermoelectrically negative.
