The Odyssey was written by a blind minstrel named Homer. It is a return epic. The Odyssey tells the story of Odysseus, King of Ithica(an iland off of Greece) and his return home to his family. Like all epics, the Odyssey sarts 'in media res'-in the middle of the story. The beginning is learnt through flashbacks.

Odysseus left to fight in the Trojian War. He left his wife, Ponelope, and his son, Telemachus, who was just a baby. He was gone fighting in the war for 10 years. He tried to go back home, but tragically he incountered obsticle after obsitcle. There were many adventures, but the greater time taking ones are these:

A goddes, Circe, entertained Odysseus and his crew at her home on her island for a year

Calypso, one of the nine muses found Odysseus shipwrecked on her shore and made him stay with her for 7 years.

ect.......

Posiden, the sea-god doesnt want Odysseus to return home because he blinded his son, Polyphemus, who was a cyclopse Many sea troubles come from Posiden's wrath.

Thankfully throughout all of this Odysseus has the help of the goddess of wisdom, daughter of Zeus, Athene.

He finally returns home after 20 years to find 108 suitors wooing his wife (along with 10 servants, bards, pages, ect...) and eating up his wealth. Athene desguises him as a beggar and with only his friend the swineherd, the cowherd, and Telemachus (he's now in his early 2o's) he kills all the suitors. (plus all the unfaithful maids and servant girls who were the suitors' girlfriends) Athene changes him back and its happily ever after. (Except Posiden's not happy because Odysseus got home. because the fates rule peoples destinies, so Posiden couldn't kill Odysseus because the fates wanted him to return home. Polyphemus isn't happy either because, well, he only had one eye and so now he can't see....)

Hope all this helped!! The Odyssey is an interesting book to read.
