A pulley is a simple machine that changes the direction of the force needed to move an object without changing the amount of force required. By using a pulley, you can apply a downward force to lift an object upwards.

What is the ‘cost’ for using a machine to increase force
The input force is called the 'effort.' It doesn't mean that we are supplying force to the machine when we are using it but we supply power to the machine using fuel and something else. But when the machine runs it has the horizontal force on it, hence it has K.E. Remember the law of conservation of energy.
A lever would be the best type of simple machine to use to pry open a can. By using a lever, you can apply a small force over a longer distance to generate a greater force at the pivot point, making it easier to open the can.
The force applied when using a simple machine is typically referred to as input force. The input force is the force that is used to operate the machine and is usually applied through a lever, pulley, or other mechanism to overcome resistance (output force) and perform work. The ratio of the output force to the input force is known as the mechanical advantage of the machine.
A lever can increase force by allowing the user to apply a smaller force over a longer distance to produce a larger force over a shorter distance. This mechanical advantage provided by the lever can make it easier to lift heavy objects or move them over a shorter distance.
The product of force times the distance the force was directed in, is called "work".The relationship between distance and force is that, when using a simple machine, to move an object it requires less force to move an object a farther distance when using a simple machine than moving an object without a simple machine. The relationship between distance and force is that, when using a simple machine, to move an object it requires less force to move an object a farther distance when using a simple machine than moving an object without a simple machine.Addition: "Using a Force (y-axis) over Distance (x-axis), the Work done can be estimated by calculating the area under the graphed line." -Arian.
The input force is proportionally smaller than the output force. If you put more force into the machine than you get out, that makes the job harder. That defeats the purpose of using the machine at all.
Simple machines make work easier by allowing us to apply force over a greater distance, but the amount of work done remains the same. This means that while we may exert less force when using a simple machine, we still need to exert the same amount of work.
input force/effort force In physics, the force that you apply to something over time is "work".
