"WiFi" originally stood as a shortened version of "Wireless Fidelity" -- kind of a play on the old "HiFi" phrase that was short for "High Fidelity" when stereo became popular many decades ago.

Today -- WiFi refers to the wireless technology based on the IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n technology used for wireless local area networking in the unlicensed spectrums of 2.4 and 5 GHz.

Is wireless communication the same as Wifi?

Yes and no. Wireless communication covers any means of sending data without wires, which could include data sent over the cellular network or even via satellite. WiFi refers specifically to short distance, high speed wireless networks, often found in homes, cafes and small businesses. The short range is what generates 'hot spots'. Technology for wider area WiFi style networks exists but is rarely used.
