The U.S. wasn't an independent country in 1776 (there was a little war called the Revolution that had just started, after all ...) and modern-denomination currency wasn't issued yet.

Without seeing your bill it's not possible to say for sure, but my guess is that you likely have some sort of fantasy bill or a so-called "collectible" issued by a private company to mark the Bicentennial.
