The U.S. only ever used a C mint mark on gold coins minted from 1838 to 1861.

Someone had a metal punch and too much time on their hands. Unfortunately the damage reduces the coin's value to what it's worth for its silver content. As of 11/2009 that's about $10. Undamaged it might be worth half again as much.

A VAM is a Peace or Morgan Dollar die variety that has been identified in the Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars by Leroy C. Van Allen and A. George Mallis. The term VAM comes from the first initials of Van Allen's and Mallis' last names.
Unless there's a small C next to the date, it's only worth about $2.50 retail; a dealer will pay face value. 1953-C $2 bills are a bit more valuable, and can be worth roughly $3 to $6 depending on how worn they are.
It's worth no less than $10. That said, for appraisal, important details are the bill's series (year) and condition.
