A four course meal is a meal that arrives in four sections.

Commonly, the first course is called a "pre-appetizer" - something to entice the palate, but also quite small. The local restaurant to me serves something called a "soup shot" with their four course meals, quite literally a very small bowl of soup.

Next comes the starter, usually prawn cocktails, soup, perhaps stuffed mushrooms. The variety on offer really depends on the establishment in question. Again, this is small compared to the main meal, but normally bigger than the first course.

Third course is the main course. As the name suggests, this will be the biggest course of the evening, and will normally be savory. Such delicacies close to me include roast meats and vegetables, vegetarian options, pasta dishes, the list is endless.

Finally, the dessert. This is usually sweet, though a cheese board is also a popular option for this course. Some people round this off with a hot drink of some kind.
