The Canol pipeline never existed in Alberta, It was constructed between Norman Wells, NWT to The Canol refinery which was located in Whitehorse, YK. It was constructed in the winter of 1943-44 and stretched approximately 750km through some of the worst terrain imaginable Throughout the life of the project it employed near 30,000 people and cost an estimated 200 million. It was constructed by the U.S army in order to receive a safe supply of oil for their fleet. The pipeline consisted of 2650 km of 4"and 6" pipe, pump stations and 1600 km of telephone lines. In 1944 the first oil reached Whitehorse and less than year later the entire project was abandoned.
