A denomination is a way to categorize Cristian churches. Christian churches across the world can be categorized over multiple levels based on divisions between one group and another defined by doctrine and church authority.

The Christian churches can be broken into 5 major faiths: Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Assyrian, and Protestant. Others might include the Eastern Rites (Greek Orthodoxy) and Anglican to this list. There also are many smaller Christian groups but these are the major groupings by geography and population. Further some of these major categories can be further broken down. The protestants include groups such as Baptist and Lutheran. The subdivisions of the protestant faith are called denominations. The subdivisions of the other major categories are seldom if ever called denomination.
